Summer College Application/Essay Workshops

Most students write an average of 7 completely different essays during the college application process.  Writing effective essays takes time. The summer following your junior year is when you should start thinking about college application essays.  By starting in the summer, the task is less stressful.  By understanding the process, it becomes less mysterious.  By getting something on paper, it becomes less daunting.  Doing College holds small summer essay and application workshops for our established clients and the community at large. Experience shows that students gain a great deal from the dynamics of a small group format.  Doing College is pleased to arrange individual appointments for students who wish to work one-on-one or have scheduling difficulties that keep them from attending a workshop.

College Help College Application/Essay Workshops for Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda, CaliforniaThe main goals of the summer workshop are to understand and begin the essay writing process and familiarize students with different types of college applications.  The essay presents an important opportunity to personalize your application and distinguish yourself from other applicants.  The Doing College workshop is intended to provide a clear and direct orientation to essay development, an outline to guide your personal writing and support with grammar and writing conventions to ensure your essay is of the highest quality possible.  There are fun exercises to help you find your voice and probe your past and present experiences for the stories that will best reveal your unique characteristics.  These warm-up writing exercises get you started writing essays that will stand out and shine.

This workshop includes information about the unique requirements of the UC Insight Questions, a review of the Common Application essay prompts and instructions about the proper writing sequence so you can successfully 'tweak' your primary essays for other applications.  Doing College reviews the most common types of supplemental essay questions colleges ask and provides structured guidance about how to respond.  Individual appointments are available directly following the workshop to provide further support and advice on essays as well as review completed applications as they become available.

"I am thrilled to tell you that I have officially accepted the Reynolds Scholarship and am looking forward to attending Wake Forest University this fall. I don't think I can properly express my gratitude and just how much I owe you. Not only did you bear with taking me in on such a tight deadline, you went above and beyond. Without you, I would not have even considered applying to Wake Forest. I can also say that you taught me not to make the mistake of falling behind the curve; this is an invaluable life lesson.  I also have grown considerably as a writer because of you and have started to feel my voice shine through my writing.  You have my sincerest thanks."
